Isaac Hempstead Wright Also Wanted Bran Stark To Die In The ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale

If you tuned into this week’s — and the last ever — Game of Thrones episode you probably walked away with a heavy feeling of discontent. After 8 seasons of waiting to see who would sit the throne, perhaps the choice seemed a bit random. Although there were a number of people who also enjoyed the ending, and that’s valid too. Isaac Hempstead Wright, who played Bran Stark, actually agrees with both sentiments.

He shares with Entertainment Weekly that he didn’t even believe this was the ‘real’ ending when reading the script:

When I got to the [Dragonpit scene] in the last episode and they’re like, ‘What about Bran?’ I had to get up and pace around the room. I genuinely thought it was a joke script and that [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] sent to everyone a script with their own character ends up on the Iron Throne. ‘Yeah, good one guys. Oh s—, it’s actually real?’

In fact, he expected (and wanted) a death in the plan for his character: “I kind of did want to die and get in one good death scene with an exploding head or something.” Eventually, though, he embraced Bran’s fate and was actually happy with it. Though he does understand the controversial reactions:

Not everyone will be happy. It’s so difficult to finish a series as popular as this without pissing some people off. I don’t think anybody will think it’s predictable and that’s as much as you can hope for. People are going to be angry. There’s going to be a lot of broken hearts. It’s ‘bittersweet,’ exactly as George R.R. Martin intended. It’s a fitting conclusion to this epic saga.

I think ‘bittersweet’ is a bit of an understatement when talking about the general reaction to the finale. But to each their own.

What did you think of the Game of Thrones ending?
