So… People are Angry that Francesca Hayward Has White Fur in ‘Cats’
Apparently, it’s not enough that the Internet isn’t happy about how the ‘Cats’ movie looks, in general. They are also unhappy about the fact that the woman who plays the lead, Francesca Hayward – who is a black woman in her non-‘Cats’ life – has *gasp* white fur instead of black fur. Believe it or not, a lot of people on Twitter are outraged by the so-called “whitewashing” of the lead actress’s face.
One tweet points out that while Taylor Swift can easily be seen behind all of the cat-like fur, but Francesca’s real skin color cannot be seen at all:
so how come you can clearly see this is taylor swift/the entire bottom half of her face is visible, but you wouldn’t know the black lead was black unless you knew her already pic.twitter.com/q8ULl6U6CJ

People are angry despite the fact that Francesca plays Victoria, who is actually a white kitten in the musical. They are also angry despite the fact that, well, she’s playing a cat. Ah, the Internet.
Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Francesca moved to England when she was two years old and eventually became a principal ballerina for the British Royal Ballet. We can’t wait to see her in ‘Cats’, regardless of the color of her fur. What about you?
