Sorsogon Sets Guinness World Record For Largest Filipino Folk Dance
Last October 31, Sorsogon broke the Guinness World record for the largest Filipino folkloric dance. There were at least 7,127 dancers performing a 30-minute synchronized “Pantomina sa Tinampo” or “love dance”, led by their very own governor Chiz Escudero and wife Heart Evangelista. The dance of huge proportions was held on the five-kilometer stretch of Sorsogon’s main street.

As the 30-minute folk dance came to a close, Guinness World Record adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar happily announced that a new record had been set. “We have a lot of guidelines, a lot of rules to be cleared in order to break a record, not just by number. I have seen all the evidence, I have surely checked how all the venues are performing and I am very happy to say that with 7,127 people, you have broken the record, this a new record to break,” Dangarikar said.

The “Pantomina sa Tinampo” is traditionally performed as a culmination of the month-long Kasanggayahan Festival. Its performers are usually dressed in blue, yellow, and red “Filipiniana” for women and white “Kamisa de Chino” for men. “Kasanggayahan” refers to a life of prosperity while the “Pantomina” is typically understood as a dance that signifies love or courtship.
